American Airlines Main Cabin Extra: Is It Worth It?
For our family, on a longer flight, yes. American Airlines Main Cabin Extra gave us more room to stretch out and an easier start to the journey. It was still economy, but those differences made our flight to California much more comfortable.
We flew from New York to Orange County for our Disneyland trip during spring break. After an uncomfortable experience in regular economy on an earlier trip, I wanted to see whether paying a little more would make a difference.
This review reflects our experience. Prices, aircraft features, and airline policies can change.
Why we decided to upgrade
Before California, we flew to Austin through Charlotte in regular economy. Our first flight was on an A321, followed by a 737 from Charlotte to Austin.
The legroom felt tight, especially on that second flight. By the time we arrived, I knew I didn’t want to spend five-plus hours flying across the country in that setup.
I wasn’t looking for luxury. I just wanted more space, an earlier boarding group, and a flight where we could settle in comfortably as a family.
When we booked California, we paid to select Main Cabin Extra seats for our American Airlines flight out. We used different airlines for the other parts of that trip to get the pricing and flexibility that worked for us.
What was different in Main Cabin Extra?
The extra legroom was noticeable
Right away, I could feel the difference. I had room to stretch out, and our son had plenty of room to get comfortable.
Main Cabin Extra seats are within the economy cabin. For us, this wasn’t about a completely different level of service. It was about having more room in the space where we would spend the next several hours.
We hadn’t measured the seats, and our Austin and California flights were on different aircraft. What I can tell you is that we felt much more comfortable on this flight.
Boarding felt less stressful
We boarded in Group 5 and had no trouble finding overhead space for our carry-ons.
If you’ve watched our travel videos, you know I prefer to travel with carry-ons whenever possible. I only check a bag when I have to because I don’t want to worry about delayed or lost luggage.
That makes boarding important to me. On a packed flight, I’m thinking about whether there will still be room for our bags by the time we get to our seats.
On this flight, we put our carry-ons away and settled in without that concern. Along with the legroom, that helped make the whole experience more relaxed.

What did we pay for Main Cabin Extra?
We paid $242.68 total for three travelers—about $81 per person—in addition to our airfare for our one-way American Airlines flight from New York to Orange County.
That was the price at the time for our flight and chosen seats. It isn’t a standard Main Cabin Extra price. What you pay will vary depending on where you’re flying, when and which seat you select.
For us, on this longer flight, the extra cost was worth it.
When looking at your own booking, check the total for everyone traveling. The amount for one seat might look reasonable, but you’ll want to see what it adds up to for your family and which flights you actually want to upgrade.
Would we pay for it again?
For another cross-country flight, absolutely—as long as the price made sense for our budget. We knew what regular economy felt like from our earlier trip, and we appreciated having more room on a longer journey.
For a flight of two hours or less, I might skip it. Regular economy could be fine, especially if I were flying solo and traveling light.
Before paying, look at the seat options and benefits shown for your flight. You can also check American Airlines’ Main Cabin Extra information.
Main Cabin Extra wasn’t a luxury upgrade, but it made a real difference for our family. That’s where I’m happy to spend a little more: when it helps us enjoy the journey.
Enjoy the journey!
